This is not your mother’s social media anymore. Joining in the conversation online for Businesses is getting to be more complicated, but equally more vital.

With constant changes in platform algorithms and content being delivered less and less to your followers and more and more to an AI-selected audience of people who “might” like what you do, it’s important for businesses to pick carefully, not just how they market online but where.

Understanding your audience, and equally your potential audience, will be the difference in making content that resonates, and content that is part of the thousands of business content scrolled past every day.

With a variety of opportunities on social media, it’s sometimes difficult to decide which platforms are going to produce the best ROI. Let’s start by discussing the biggest players on the field. We’re talking Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. Game changers. Deciding on which platform is best for your business to start with depends entirely on your industry. There’s no point setting up accounts on any social media platform if your audience isn’t using it. You’ll be wasting your own time and resources creating content to fall on deaf ears (or eyes, in this case).

To strip each platform back to basics; TikTok is changing the game, changing the way we consume content and potentially changing our attention spans, prioritising video content with an algorithm attuned to what you like, have liked, and will like so expertly people can loose hours doom scrolling content online.

Instagram was created purely for people to share photos, it’s an online gallery.

Facebook has the ability to post status updates or update galleries and share reels. You’ll be able to reach your audience through a whole variety of media… if you have the content.

Now, take a step back and look at your business from an outsider’s perspective to determine where you should start your social media journey. Now that you’ve found the platform you’d like to couple up with, you need to work out how you will manage this new relationship. It’s important to think about the payoff from what you are posting; marketing is not a quick fix; it takes time, dedication and energy. So picking one or two key platforms you can realistically show up on for your audience is best.

Once you have your platforms down and your schedule considered, it’s time to think content. Rules we live by as an agency are simple: Build a community, engage outside of your own page, create content you WANT to make and resonates with your message, listen to your audience, if they are switching off, switch it up.

Once you’ve mastered one or two, you might want to consider tackling another one. You’d certainly make more of an impact by sharing your content on multiple platforms, provided it’s relevant. There are plenty more platforms to consider, such as LinkedIn, YouTube, Reddit and Snapchat, to name a few.
